This self-portrait has the quality of a snap-shot – Richardson leans back, peering at his reflection, to make a quick sketch.
The sheet has been stamped with various collectors’ marks. On the right is the capital ‘R’ employed by his son Jonathan Richardson the Younger, and at lower left Richardson’s own ‘JR’ monogram can be seen, showing through the translucent vellum sheet from the back. At the bottom left the angular outline of Sir Robert Witt’s stamp also shows through from the verso, and in the left-hand corner an obtrusive but so far unidentified mark has been stamped on the vellum.
