In 1652 – a few years after his return to Rome from Florence – Rosa was commissioned to produce a prestigious Battle Scene, which was intended as a gift for King Louis XIV of France. He executed a number of lively small sketches, including this energetic sheet, for some of the many warrior figures in the painting. The nervous pen and wash technique is typical of Rosa’s drawings from this period.
