Accompanied by his attribute, a lion, Saint Mark is shown receiving divine inspiration while recording the Gospel. The precisely finished drawing, dated October 23, 1632, was probably part of a series, as there are two other sheets with the Evangelists Saint John and Saint Matthew, dated September 6 and 21, 1632. Pacheco was influential as a teacher and as a writer on art, placing the greatest importance on the correctness of contours and clarity of forms, as reflected in this hieratic image.

Provenance

Frank Hall Standish (1799-1840), probably acquired in Seville, early 1630s; bequeathed by him to Louis Philippe, King of France (1773-1850); purchased at his estate sale, Defer and Potier (Paris), 6 December 1852 by Sir William Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878); by descent to his son, Sir John Stirling Maxwell, Glasgow (1866-1956); his sale, Sotheby's (London), 15 - 16 February 1921, lot 249; presumably purchased there by E. Parsons & Sons (London); their sale, cat. 38, 1921, lot 400; purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b (£2.7); Witt Bequest 1952
