This lively exploratory sketch of a cherub seen from below is drawn with some virtuosity. It had been trimmed from a larger sheet before a collector added Cano’s name at the lower right, an attribution that cannot be sustained, as the line in this drawing is more sinuous and playful than is typical for Cano.

Provenance

Sir William Stirling Maxwell, London (1818-1878); by descent to his son, Sir John Stirling Maxwell, Glasgow (1866-1956); his sale, Sotheby's (London), 15 - 16 February 1921, lot 249; presumably purchased there by E. Parsons & Sons (London); their sale, cat. 38, 1921, lot 370 (with D.1952.RW.137, 138, 139 and 141, all mounted together as by Cano); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt (1875-1952), L.2228b (15 shillings); Witt Bequest 1952
