According to Greek mythology, Sisyphus, a king of Corinth, was notorious for his deceitfulness. He was condemned in Hades to push a great boulder perpetually uphill. This is one of a number of studies describing various ways he might have moved the heavy stone. Pentimenti or minor changes to the legs and hands show Guercino rethinking their position. Unusually, he has drawn on the back of a letter.

Notes

A reference in the letter on the verso to the painting of 'Abigail appeasing the wrath of David by offering Gifts' (formerly at Bridgewater House but destroyed by fire in 1941), which can be dated 1636, suggests this drawing is connected with the only painting of Sisyphus recorded in Guercino's account book, for which payment was received from Conte Girolamo Ranuzzi of Bologna on 28 October 1636. There are five surviving preparatory drawings for this commission.

Provenance
