In this study, drawn on coarse paper, Guercino focuses his attention on the upper part of the body of a young man arranged in an academic pose. The contours of the body have been rapidly recorded in long strokes, and the left arm and hand remain abbreviated. Guercino has concentrated on the sensitive rendering of the head with its dark shaded eyes, unshaven chin blotted with dots and wispy ruffled hair.
