As is typical of Guercino’s genre scenes, it is not clear whether there is a hidden meaning in this comic narrative. Unnoticed by the young woman concentrating on her work in the foreground, a young child struggles with a large platter of food, which doubtlessly will fall to the floor. The man sitting on a log points to the infant in anticipation of the accident.
