Label Text

A group of travellers on a winding road draws the eye toward the towers and distinctive water mills of the Syrian city of Hama in the middle ground, set amid a mountainous landscape. It is unclear whether Peeters actually visited Syria himself or whether he based this drawing upon prints or contemporary travellers’ reports. This drawing may relate to his album of views of sites in the Middle East which were etched by Gaspar Bouttats (around 1640-1695) and published in 1672.
