Label Text

Alexander the Great's visit to the philosopher Diogenes, who lived in a barrel, is shown here. When Alexander granted Diogenes a favour, the philosopher simply requested him to stand aside as he was shading him from the sun. The rich application of wash and bodycolour conveys the sharp contrast between light and shade.
Domenico Mondo was a pupil of Francesco Solimena (1657–1747), one of the key painters in early eighteenth-century Naples.
