This drawing is a typical product of Turner's 1794 Midlands tour. Buildings of different periods and styles appear to merge into one. From the elegant town house and modest inn near the foreground to the medieval church and tower above and beyond, the group is bound together by a decorative play of gables, pinnacles and castellations. A faint indication of a covered cart, in an otherwise empty street, is the only sign of human activity.

Provenance

friend of the artist, Charles Stokes (1784-1853); Thomas Hughes; by descent to his niece, Mrs F. Hughes, Reigate, Surrey; her sale, Sotheby's (London), 28 November 1922, lot 132 (as 'Unidentified Church'); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b (£18.5); Witt Bequest 1952
