A specific locale for this patchwork of fields and low hills has not been identified; however, it encapsulates much that is typical of Dutch landscape, from the topography to the bird’s-eye perspective. The insistent horizontality of the closely packed parallel hatching enhances the sense of breadth. The perspective and the firm framing line suggest a sense of ownership of the land; perhaps the drawing was made for a landowner. Wilkens worked mainly in Italy; Dutch landscapes are relatively rare in his surviving oeuvre.

Provenance

Hugh Howard, London (1675-1737); by descent to Charles Francis Arnold Howard, 5th Earl of Wicklow (1839-1881); probably his estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 12 December 1873, lot 1035 (as by Jan Wyck); purchased there by Dalting (? annotated catalogue is difficult to read, see in file); Henry Gay Hewlett, Kent (1832-1897); his estate sale, Sotheby's (London), 28 - 29 November 1922, lot 47 (as by Wyck); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), L.2228b (£4); Witt Bequest 1952
