Tiny figures at left and in the centre underscore the colossal scale of the trees in this wild forest. This drawing appears to copy an engraving by the Flemish printmaker Aegidius Sadeler after a drawing by Roelandt Savery. The use of wash afforded the artist possibilities for subtle shading and dramatic lighting, particularly on the trunk of the bent tree at right, which were more difficult to achieve in an engraving.
