Provenance
Robert Vernon (1774-1849); Hibbard (?); purchased there by Sir Robert Witt, London (1872-1952), n.d. (£1.5); Witt Bequest 1952 Witt's card catalogue key identifies the seller as 'Hibbard', but I wonder if this is a misspelling of 'Hibbert', as George Hibbert purchased a number of other Gainsborough drawings in the artist's sale (see for instance D.1952.RW.554, where the provenance begins: the artist's sale, Christie's (London), 11 May 1799, lot 82, 84 or 88 as part of a sketchbook; purchased there by George Hibbert, London (1757-1837); by descent to Arthur Henry Holland-Hibbert (1855-1935); his sale, Christie's (London), 30 June 1913...). If so, this could have implications for the attribution of the artist as well. The same goes for D.1952.RW.1062 and 1065.
