Signed and dated, this elaborate drawing was either intended for sale to a collector or meant as a personal souvenir of the artist’s visit to Italy in the mid-1630s. Although the subject is typically Dutch, the peasants’ clothes could be Italian, suggesting that it might have been drawn from life in Rome. The drawing’s large format, the monumentality and concentrated facial expression of the reading peasant endow him with unusual dignity.
