Label Text

In 1886 Pissarro mentioned, in letters to his son Lucien, three pen and ink drawings executed in a new pointillist technique, all showing market scenes. This charming study of a simply dressed peasant girl was probably executed within the same context. The definition of the figure is exclusively based on black ink dots. Depending on the density of their placement they evoke lighter and darker areas, whilst a particularly dense “cloud” of marks to the figure’s left effectively puts the bust into relief.
