Inscription: Recto: lower right, brown ink, 'AMD' in monogram: TvT / AMD / 29; lower margin, brown ink: Ulysse prend congé d’Alcinoüs, Roÿ des pheaciens, il se met sur mer pour retourner en Ithaque. il se voit par là, qu’apres toute sorte d’aventures, / que les hommes ont couruës en voyageant chez les Estrangers, leur plus violent desir aspire sans cesse à leur patrie, comme la / pierre d’aimant se tourne tousjours du costé du Nord. [Ulysses taking his leave of Alcinous, the king of the Phaeacians, puts himself to sea in order to return to Ithaca. Thus we see that after all kinds of adventures which men undergo travelling in foreign parts, their strongest wish is ceaselessly directed towards their home, as a magnet invariably turns towards the north pole.]
