Inscriptions

Watermark: Historic secondary support, verso, right centre: crowned shield (only visible in raking light). Unable to see what shield contains.

Inscription: Recto: lower left, brown ink, ‘AvD’ in monogram, type 2: 5. TvT. [After a nine-day storm, Ulysses is cast on the shores of the Lotus-eaters; in order to discover the identity of the people, he sent several of his companions ashore. Who has not previously tasted the fruits of this country may be led to forget that of their birth. But the righteous severity of their leader recalls them to their duty and makes them return to their boats. Which teaches us that true courage always acts correctly and punishes the weakness of those that follow]. Album page, Recto: upper left, graphite: 61971 / 13.
