Label Text

This drawing is one of many that Ruskin made in preparation for illustrations to The Stones of Venice, his enormously influential reconstruction of the city’s architectural history, published in three volumes in 1851-53.

The drawing shows the evolution of the acanthus leaf from Greek to Renaissance ornament seen on a variety of capitals on the waterside front of the Doge’s Palace. Ruskin argued that the ‘chaste form and restrained power’ of the Gothic ornament was preferable to the ‘luxuriance’ of the Renaissance approach.

the artist's cousin and heir, Joan Agnew Severn (1846-1924) and her husband, Arthur Severn (1842-1931); Barrow Cadbury (1826-1958); Professor Anthony Blunt (1907-1983); Blunt Gift 1946
