This work relates to a large number of drawings and paintings of domestic interiors in which Sickert plays out different psychological tensions between the recurring figures of a man and a woman. For many of these works he employed two middle-aged models called ‘Hubby’ and ‘Marie’, but here the female figure is a young girl. She dominates the foreground while the somewhat threatening figure of Hubby reclines on a chair behind her.
Provenance
purchased from the artist by Percy Moore Turner of the Independent Gallery (London), 12 July 1924 (£14 14s); purchased there by Samuel Courtauld, London (1876-1947), 18 December 1924 (with D.1935.SC.19, 37 and 38); Courtauld Gift 1935
