This humorously titled drawing of a cook in chef’s whites relates to Sickert’s painting 'The Tottenham Distillery' (around 1924, Tate, London), which probably represents an old fashioned tavern at 6 Oxford Street, where Sickert used to lunch. Considering the artist’s habit of carrying scraps of paper about with him to make on-the-spot drawings, it is possible that he drew this man on a visit to The Tottenham.

Provenance

purchased from the artist by Percy Moore Turner of the Independent Gallery (London), 12 July 1924 (£7 7s); purchased there by Samuel Courtauld, London (1876-1947), 18 December 1924 (with D.1935.SC.19, 37 and 39); Courtauld Gift 1935
