During this period the female nude became a major subject in Sickert’s work. Rather than idealizing his models Sickert emphasized the often unflattering ‘reality’ of them. In this rough sketch for a painting entitled 'The Poet and his Muse' (1907, Towner Gallery, Eastbourne), he exaggerates the flabbiness of the woman’s hips and stomach. Sickert often chose coloured paper for many of his drawings; over time these materials have faded to the buff colour of this work, losing their original vibrancy.
