While Maillol is best known as a sculptor, he was also a prolific draughtsman, turning to his sketchbook again and again as a wellspring of inspiration for his sculpture. This weighty nude, sketched on what appears to be a sheet torn from a ruled ledger, is typical of his careful, deliberate working method. A reworked area on the left thigh indicates that he adjusted the pose slightly as he drew.
