Forain depicted views from backstage at the opera throughout much of his career. He was especially interested in the more indecorous social aspects of the ballet, observing that the dancers were often sought after by older men.
Here Forain renders the dancer in gauzy white gouache leaning against a wall and looking out at us. Her facial features, like those of the two sketchily-defined men behind her, are muddled to the point of ambiguity, leaving us to interpret the expressions and intentions of each figure.
