Line and colour compete for the viewer’s attention in this vibrant still life. The artist’s signature, in pencil in the lower left corner, is sober in comparison to the lustrous watercolours around it. Signac completed this work in Antibes, where he had lived since 1913. It is probably a preparatory study for an oil painting of the same title, now in a private collection. The inscription here helps us to date the painting, which had been assigned an earlier date before the link between the two works was recognised.
