Label Text

This watercolour shows an angler seated by what is probably the harbour of Martigues, north-west of Marseilles. The town itself is rendered in schematic lines and blocks of colour. Dufy established the rough outlines of the composition in pencil before adding the watercolour washes. The transparency of the watercolour medium and the unpainted areas of paper combine to produce a delicate, lyrical effect.
