Amelia Long used blue paper for many of her most ambitious landscapes, taking the paper’s tone as a midtone for the finely rendered clouds. The seated female figure at lower right may be a subtle self-portrait.<br><br>An aristocrat, Long was a prolific honorary exhibitor at the Royal Academy between 1807 and 1822.
