In the following years, he became one of the strongest advocates of modern French painting. With its rhythm of dark trees against a watery twilit landscape, the painting reflects Fry's interest at the time in the European movement known as Symbolism, in which mood and mystery are expressed throguh a flattening of shapes. He made the work for the New English Art Club, which was founded to promote modernism; however the jury, more interested in Impressionism, refused to show it.
